[week two - friday]
[ It's sunrise! The doors are unlocked. We're all ready for a beautiful new day on Moron Island--
Except for the part where the investigation will be starting soon, and Vriska, looking wild and terrified, will be slamming out of the hut she shares with Jinah and just fucking bolting. Were there people near the bonfire? Huh. Who cares. She's outta here.
Not that she goes far. She doesn't really think to. Like an animal seeking shelter, Vriska will ensconce herself in the small, dark, humid space beneath the longhouse. Pressed up against one of the structure's supports, Vriska curls up in a ball and tugs on her hair and thinks probably she will skip helping with the investigation today, maybe.
Get close enough and you can just kind of hear her chanting "fuck this" over and over. ]

... Which he isn't getting anytime soon.
Even in his tiredness, he doesn't miss Vriska bolting for the longhouse. Perhaps on another day, this wouldn't be so odd (excepting possibility of murder, anyway), but considering the events of last night...
He follows after her, and finds her curled up.]
Vriska...?

[ He'll find her tugging on her hair, her eyes tightly shut. Her face is streaked with blue, which is weird
Anyway after a moment she'll open her eyes to look at him, her expression very flat. ]
If you don't mind, I am pretty busy having a total meltdown. What do you want?
no subject
He sits down.]
For you to not be alone as you are having a "total meltdown".
no subject
Eventually she'll look up at him again and just ... like ... reach out to whatever part of him is closest as if to confirm he's real. Which will obviously be the case when she mutters: ]
Not that that proves anything.
[ ... ]
Don't you have better things to be doing? Like stalking the robots, or whatever it was you losers were up to. I wasn't really paying that much attention. [ She's just kind of assuming that was the reason. ]
no subject
We have been watching them all night. At this point, they would have little time to do anything—and the other four are more than enough. My presence is unnecessary, particularly at this point.
no subject
[ It's pretty clear at this point she's just doing her level best to dodge the issue. ]
... given your as-yet-untold tragic backstory, I'm sure you had fun all night! Hallucinating whatever. Who knows, maybe you got lucky and just saw, I don't know, people holding hands and living peacefully, since I guess that would be your ideal?
[ She makes an amused sound that ends up not working because she is congested from crying. It sounds like snork. She'll rub at her face, clearing tear trails old and new. ]
Bluh. Yeah right.
no subject
You can say whatever you like, Vriska, but it is very obvious that you are compensating for your own "as-yet-untold tragic backstory" at the moment.
[With someone else, he might've been a bit gentler about this, but.]
no subject
But she will sigh, finally letting go of her extremely tangled, messy hair to just let her hands rest on top of her knees instead. ]
No one asked you. [ Again, there's no bite to the words. She just kind of sounds tired. ]
It's not a big deal. I guess I just feel pretty dumb for letting all of this get to me when I know it's not real? Like, how pathetic am I, haha. I bet my so-called "friends" would find this pretty funny. Big bad scary Vriska, reduced to crying like a wiggler about stupid bullshit! They'd just love to see me put in my place.
[ ... rubs her face again. ]
Sorry. As you can tell, I'm not great at accepting kindness from others at face value.
no subject
You need better friends, in that case.
no subject
[ firmly. Vriska takes a deep, steadying breath. ]
I am fine, Lief. You don't need to watch over me or whatever it is you think you're doing.
no subject
[He won't deny that Vriska has an unpleasant attitude.]
I am not so eager to start looking for corpses.
no subject
[ Not that he's wrong. She doesn't seem offended.
A sniff. She's still pretty congested. ]
Haha. Corpses, multiple? Now that's the kind of forward-thinking optimism I like to hear. [ a smile, faint. ]

You have a lot of faith in other people. Hold onto those convictions, Lief. We'll need someone like you, who believes in others but doesn't act all naive about what they're capable of.
[ A sniff. Jeez. ]
... do you have guardians? Parents, I think is the word my human friend used.
no subject
Alive or deceased?
no subject
Uh, either one, I guess. I am more asking if you grew up with parents.
no subject
[?]
Yes, I did.
no subject
[ She is probably going somewhere with this. You know. Probably. ]

[ A breath. ]
That is not what it's like for trolls. I mean, I guess some of them luck out and get these really cool or really benign guardians that are just fun and great to be around all the time! Haha. Man. I used to be so bitter about that. I was not so fortunate! Haha.
[ Vriska starts to run her hands through her hair before she seems to realize it is hopelessly ratty and just. Pulls her hands back into her lap and leaves it alone. ]
My guardian was a monster. Literally. She was a huge fucking spider.
no subject
Does she have anything to do with your illusions?
no subject
[ What's the point. What's the point of any of this. ]
If I ever failed in my role as her charge, she would have eaten me. I was terrified of her when I was a kid.
[ Vriska blows out a breath that seems purposefully aimed at a bit of hair hanging in her face, trying to get it out of her face. It doesn't work. Ain't that just her luck. ]
I just kind of thought I was over it?
no subject
I do not think that that is something that one ever truly moves on from.
no subject
Believe me, I know how it sounds! And I had to feed her. Guess what that meant? Killing! And lots of it. It sounds terrible! And to be honest, it was terrible. I hated every second of it.
[ BLUURRUGHGURUGHUGUHGH. scrubs her hands over her face. ]
I was supposed to be strong enough, you know? To handle her. But looking back on it now ... seriously, who thinks it's okay to hand a child over to a terrifying carnivorous monster? Troll culture is really fucked up.
[ fl...ops??? onto her back. hands still pressed to her face. ]
Why am I even telling you this?? Outside of just like, freaking you out, I guess. Haha.
no subject
[He knows it's one thing for Vriska to badmouth her culture and another thing for Lief to agree.]
I am not "freaked out". [He smiles wryly.] As someone who was nearly sacrificed and devoured in such a manner, stories alone about such a thing do not quite frighten me.
That you continued to hate it and can state even now that it was terrible—that speaks more about your character than anything else.
no subject
[ Vriska lowers her hands and tilts her head to look at him.
A deep breath in, a slow sigh out, and she'll smile. There's something nostalgic about it, a bizarre look on her face given her general attitude. ]
You remind me of someone I know, Lief. He used to say things like that to me, too. It is embarrassing to admit, but it meant a lot to me, that he wanted to believe in me that way despite what I am and what I told him. Just like you're telling me now. Frankly, it is a walk down memory lane I could have done without! But that's not your fault.
[ Vriska sits up, giving her head a shake out. ]
You should get out of here. The investigation will start soon. Sorry, but I'm going to stay here. I don't want anyone else seeing me like this.
